ESD Protection Devices (anti-static components)Example of TVS Diode Usage for Communication (GPS)

What is communication?

Communication generally refers to sending and receiving information. Communication can be done over a wire or wirelessly.
Examples of each are provided below.

Wired communication
Cable TV, wired LAN, etc.
Wireless communication
Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®, GPS, GLONASS, etc.

TVS Diodes and Problems with ESD in Communication Devices

If contact is made between a communication device and a person or an object, static electricity will be generated and become intrusive.
There are many cases where this static electricity travels to an IC and causes a malfunction.
A TVS diode can be used to prevent this issue with static electricity from occurring.

Usage Example in a GPS Antenna Circuit

In a GPS antenna circuit, ESD and induced surges can easily intrude via the antenna system, making it important to protect high-sensitivity RF devices such as LNA.
TVS diodes have a high-speed response that makes it possible to instantly suppress intruding overvoltage and effectively protect RF front-end circuits.
In addition, the small capacitance between pins minimizes the impact on RF characteristics for GPS high-frequency and faint signals, which keeps the drop in reception sensitivity to a minimum.

A usage example and recommended part numbers for a TVS diode in a GPS antenna circuit are provided below.
