Infrared SensorsFAQ

What is the detection distance of a pyroelectric infrared sensor?

The detection distance changes according to various conditions, so such information cannot be provided.
The detection distance changes according to the following conditions.

  • (1) Sensitivity of the sensor itself
  • (2) Type of Fresnel lens (mirror)
  • (3) Circuit conditions
(amplification factor, frequency characteristics of the amplifier circuit, comparator threshold value, etc.)
  • (4) Environmental temperature
  • (5) Target (person) state
(movement speed, height, clothing, movement direction, etc.)

Can pyroelectric infrared sensors be used in a vehicle?

No, they cannot be used in a vehicle. Because the characteristics of pyroelectric infrared sensors may be lost in a high temperature environment such as the inside of a vehicle, avoid using these sensors in automotive applications.

Do pyroelectric infrared sensors have any disadvantages?

They may malfunction due to sunlight and wind from an air conditioner, etc. The temperature and distance cannot be measured due to sunlight and wind from an air conditioner, etc.

Can they detect a person who has stopped?

In principle, a person who is completely at a standstill cannot be detected.
Small, precise human movements may become easier to pick up by refining the detection area through a combination of a sensor and a lens.

Do pyroelectric infrared sensors respond to non-human subjects?

They also respond to animals, etc. Because pyroelectric infrared sensors detect temperature differences between the background temperature and the subject, it is not the case that they respond only to people.

Can they measure human body temperature and heat?

They cannot measure body temperature and heat.

Do you offer low power supply models?

"Low consumption current" is a question which is frequently asked when it comes to infrared sensors. It depends on the customer's circuit, but because infrared sensors themselves are passive components, they can be used with a lower consumption current than near-infrared sensors.

Is reflow possible?

Reflow is not supported.
